Get a Fresh Start: 4 Powerful Ways to Detoxify Your Body Today

I am the absolute queen of fresh starts (#AllHailQueenMerhipsy). Purging is one of my favorite pastimes and I adore every chance I get to “start over”. New Moon, Full Moon, the first of the month, my birthday, New Year’s Eve…and even a Monday. If it’s the beginning of something new, I am all about it. I naturally gravitate towards rearranging my furniture, cleaning out my closest and donating clothes, and of course giving my house a good once-over quite regularly to get my fresh start fix…but what about giving our bodies a way to reset?

The best way to provide our bodies with a clean slate is through detoxifying activities. What is detoxifying? It essentially refers to cleaning our blood so that all of our systems can function at higher levels. Detoxes have been practiced for centuries by cultures all over the globe and are integral parts of traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and TCM.

Detoxing provides the body a window of time to rest the organs, stimulate and enhance liver function, improve circulation, and refuel the body with proper nutrients. This is particularly important for our livers where toxins are processed for elimination.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you are in need of a detox:

  1. Moodiness
  2. Sluggishness
  3. Acne or irritated skin
  4. Mental cloudiness or confusion
  5. Abnormal fatigue
  6. White or yellow coated tongue, or bad breath
  7. Congestion or fluid retention
  8. Increased fat
  9. Cravings or blood sugar issues
  10. Excess perspiration

Odds are that more than one of these apply to you. We live in a world full of people using products all around us (and some we use ourselves) that are full of harsh chemicals and toxins. It’s pretty much a given that you will need to detox about once a month.

So now that you know you need one…where to begin? It can be so overwhelming and the internet is FULL of daunting information about how to start a detox. To help you out, I have outlined four simple detoxifying activities that you can gently partake in over the course of a few days or a weekend to get your body back on track.

1. Massage

Kick-start your own natural detox process by treating yourself to a nice deep tissue massage! The rhythmic strokes and manipulation of muscle, tissues, and even organs stimulates the circulatory system to regenerate clean blood vessels. Massage also enhances the function of the lymphatic system to flush toxins and carry immune cells throughout the body to help fight against disease.

2. Epsom Salt Bath with Essential oils

This one is self care stacked on self care! Relaxing, hot, aromatic bath that can rid my body of toxins? Don’t mind if I do! A hot bath with epsom salt alone can be a great way to detoxify the body, as it is known to raise magnesium levels in the body and improve that all important circulation. However, epsom salt is most popular for its ability to help the body use insulin and for flushing toxins and heavy metals out of the body. Adding a few drops of naturally detoxifying essential oils like Grapefruit, Lemon, and Juniper Berry (which is also a circulatory stimulant) can take these refreshing benefits to a whole new level! If you want to add a little something that is also calming yet uplifting to the spirits, try putting in a few drops of Jasmine as well. For best results add 3 cups of epsom salt, 1 table spoon of white clay, and 10-20 drops of essential oils to your hot bath. If you want to climb the Everest of self care, add fresh flower petals and candles into the mix!

3. Juice cleanse

Although I would not recommend a cleanse for more than 3 days, especially for those new to cleansing, this is a GREAT way to let your body naturally reset. It may be best to consult your physician before undertaking a cleanse. Drinking only five 16oz juices each day for three solid days allows the body to flush out any harmful chemicals, toxins, or even allergens that you may have ingested through eating unhealthful foods (foods that have been processed or contain GMOs). It also fills the body with all the nutrients and minerals you need in a more direct way.

Try my favorite green juice recipe for starters! This recipe will provide you with about 2 servings of juice. I call it “Green With Envy” since that is how others will feel when they see how fly you look and how healthy you are!

  • 5 stalks celery
  • 2 cucumbers (or 5 persian cucumbers)
  • 5-10 leaves of Kale
  • 5-10 leaves of Romaine
  • 1 heaping handful of spinach
  • 3 green apples
  • 5 baby broccoli stems
  • 1 pear

Be sure to use ORGANIC ingredients to avoid the very chemicals and pesticides that you are trying to flush out by doing this cleanse!

Can’t make juice yourself? No problem! There are lots of places to get fresh pressed juices almost anywhere. However, the initial cost of getting a juicer will eventually be less than the price of getting juices regularly at $7- $9 a pop (just sayin’!)

4. Liver Cleansing Supplements

The liver is the cleanser and filter for the bloodstream. By introducing herbs such as dandelion root, burdock, and milk thistle into your daily routine, you can keep your liver healthy and free of toxins. This practice actually eliminates the need for regular detoxes because you will be taking preventative action to maintain healthy liver function.

Want to take detoxing a step further? Try removing harsh chemical products like cleaners, candles with synthetic substances and scents, and of course AVOID processed foods!! You will be AMAZED by how good you feel after just one month of clean eating and clean living!

Today's Affirmation

Go forward, babes, and treat your body like the temple it is!! Clear out anything that no longer serves you by starting on the INSIDE! Namaste. xo
